When I have visitors on the Costa Blanca or when I recommend day trips, there is one place that almost always makes it onto the list: the Fonts de l’Algar near Callosa d’en Sarrià. Even after so many years living between the coast and the inland mountains, I still don’t lose that feeling that this place is something special. It is no longer an unknown hidden gem – but it still manages to impress me every single time I stand there and hear the sound of the water rushing through the rocks.

Where are the Fonts de l’Algar?

The Fonts de l’Algar are located in the municipality of Callosa d’en Sarrià, in the province of Alicante. The natural area lies about 15 kilometres inland from the coast, surrounded by the mountains of the Marina Baixa region.

The Algar River originates in the nearby mountain ranges of the Sierra de Bernia and the Sierra del Ferrer. From there, it forms a series of waterfalls, natural pools, and small cascades along its course.

The name “Algar” comes from Arabic and is often interpreted as meaning “cave” or “spring”. This region has been shaped by different civilizations over centuries, including the Romans, Moors, and Christians. Water has always played a central role in agriculture and settlement in this area.

The history of the Fonts de l’Algar

The springs and waterways of the Fonts de l’Algar have existed for thousands of years. The landscape was formed through natural geological processes, as water carved its way through limestone rock, creating the waterfalls and pools we see today.

The Moors already used this water for irrigation of surrounding fruit and vegetable plantations. Even today, traditional irrigation channels and terraced fields are still visible throughout the Callosa d’en Sarrià area. The region is especially well known for its cultivation of loquats (Nísperos), a fruit that is grown on a significant scale almost exclusively in this part of Spain.

In 2002, the Fonts de l’Algar were officially declared a protected wetland area. The aim was to preserve the unique flora and fauna as well as maintain the water quality. Today, the site successfully combines nature conservation, tourism, and environmental education.

What to expect when visiting the Fonts de l’Algar

From the moment you enter the natural park, it becomes clear why the Fonts de l’Algar are considered one of the most beautiful natural attractions on the Costa Blanca. A well-marked circular walking route of around 1.5 kilometres follows the course of the river, leading visitors past waterfalls, small cascades, and crystal-clear pools.

The water comes directly from the surrounding mountains and is known for its exceptional purity. Even in the height of summer, the temperature remains refreshingly cool, which is why many visitors use the natural pools to cool off.

The larger waterfalls are particularly impressive, with water falling several metres into natural basins below. The sound of rushing water, combined with fresh air and lush vegetation, creates an atmosphere that feels surprisingly remote compared to the often busy coastline just a short drive away.

Swimming in natural pools

One of the highlights of the Fonts de l’Algar is the opportunity to swim in natural rock pools. Unlike a conventional swimming pool, this is a completely natural river environment.

The water is clean, clear, and constantly renewed by the springs. Many visitors spend hours here, swimming between rocks, relaxing on flat stone surfaces, or simply enjoying the scenery around them.

Families especially appreciate the safe and structured environment, although it is important to note that it is still a natural setting. The ground can be uneven and slippery in places, so water shoes are highly recommended.

Nature and surroundings

Beyond the waterfalls, the entire area is rich in vegetation. Oleander, reeds, ferns, pine trees, and a variety of Mediterranean plants thrive along the riverbanks. The humidity creates a small microclimate that feels noticeably different from the drier coastal areas.

Wildlife is also part of the experience. With a bit of luck, you can spot dragonflies, frogs, small fish, and a variety of bird species. For me, this is one of the places where you truly realize how diverse the Costa Blanca really is.

Walking paths and viewpoints

The walking route along the river is well maintained and easy to follow. Wooden bridges, footpaths, and stepped sections guide visitors safely through the area.

It is a relatively easy walk, suitable for families and older visitors as well. However, I would still recommend wearing proper footwear, as some parts can be wet or slippery.

Nearby attractions: botanical garden and dinosaur park

Very close to the Fonts de l’Algar you will also find additional attractions. One of the most popular is the DinoPark Algar, which is especially loved by families with children. There are also small botanical areas and nature trails that explain more about the local flora.

This makes it very easy to combine a visit to the waterfalls with a full and varied day trip.

Getting there by car

The easiest way to reach the Fonts de l’Algar is by car.

From nearby towns, the driving times are:

  • Altea: about 15 minutes
  • Benidorm: about 20 minutes
  • Calpe: about 25 minutes
  • Jávea: around 40–45 minutes

There are several paid parking areas on site. During high season, it is highly recommended to arrive early, as the area can become very busy, especially in summer.

Public transport

Public transport is possible, but limited.

Typically, you would take the TRAM Alicante towards Altea or Benidorm and then continue by bus to Callosa d’en Sarrià. In summer, additional tourist bus connections are sometimes available, but schedules vary depending on the season.

Because of this, many visitors prefer renting a car or joining an organised excursion.

Entrance fees

Entrance fees are usually around 5–6 euros for adults, with reduced prices for children, seniors, and groups.

The fee contributes to the maintenance of the area, cleaning of pathways, and protection of the natural environment.

Best time to visit

The Fonts de l’Algar are open year-round and each season has its own charm.

Spring is particularly beautiful, with lush vegetation and strong water flow. Summer is perfect for swimming and cooling off in the natural pools. Autumn and winter offer a quieter experience, ideal for walking and enjoying nature without crowds.

If you prefer a calmer visit, I would recommend going early in the morning or outside peak holiday periods.

Tips for your visit

From my experience, it is worth preparing properly for the visit. Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, and water shoes if you plan to go into the water. A waterproof bag for phones or cameras is also a good idea.

And most importantly: take your time. This is not a place to rush through.

My personal impression

For me, the Fonts de l’Algar are one of those places you can return to again and again without it ever feeling the same or boring. It shows a completely different side of the Costa Blanca – away from the beaches and tourist crowds, into something greener, cooler, and much more natural.

Even after all these years, it is still a place that reminds me how diverse this region really is.
