1. The crown jewel: Castillo de Santa Bárbara (Alicante)

The guardian of Alicante: the Castillo de Santa Bárbara
The famous Castillo de Santa Bárbara rises majestically on the 166-metre-high Benacantil hill and has watched over the city of Alicante for centuries. Anyone gazing at the city’s skyline will immediately spot the fortress’s imposing walls rising high above the sparkling Mediterranean. From up here, a spectacular panoramic view unfolds over Alicante, the harbour, the city beach and the endless coastline. For many visitors, the castle is one of the most beautiful sights on the entire Costa Blanca – and quite rightly so!
But the Castillo de Santa Bárbara is far more than just an old castle. It uniquely combines history, adventure, the Mediterranean way of life and breathtaking views. Families in particular love this special place, because here the past comes to life without ever feeling dry or boring. Instead of quiet museum rooms, you’ll find sprawling fortress walls, winding passageways, old cannons and open spaces where little explorers can let their imaginations run wild. And best of all: entry to the castle is free – making this impressive outing not only unforgettable but also particularly family-friendly.
The history of the Castillo de Santa Bárbara
The castle’s origins date back as far as the Moorish period. The first fortification was built on Mount Benacantil as early as the 9th century. Thanks to its strategically perfect location, it was possible to control both the sea and the inland areas from here.
In 1248, the Castilian prince Alfonso of Castile – later King Alfonso X – recaptured the fortress from the Moors. The day of the recapture coincided with the feast day of Saint Barbara, which is why the castle was given its present name.
Over the centuries, the fortress was continually expanded. Various cultures and rulers left their mark, resulting in the impressive blend of Moorish, medieval and military architecture that can be seen today.
The fortress itself has been a listed building since 1961 and was officially designated a ‘Monumento histórico-artístico’, highlighting its immense historical and cultural significance for Alicante and the entire region.
What is particularly fascinating is that the castle is not just a historical monument, but a place steeped in legend. The best-known of these revolves around the so-called ‘Cara del Moro’.
The legend of the ‘Cara del Moro’
If you look towards Benacantil Mountain from the beach or the harbour, with a little imagination you can make out the outline of a face in the rock. This natural phenomenon is known as the ‘Cara del Moro’ – the Face of the Moor.
According to legend, a young princess fell in love with a commoner. However, her father, a Moorish ruler, forbade their love. In her despair, the princess threw herself off the mountain. Her father died of grief shortly afterwards, and it is said that his face was forever etched into the rock.
Children love this story, and adults too often stop in their tracks, fascinated, to look for the stone face in the mountain. The climb up – an adventure in itself
Even the walk to the castle is an experience in itself. If you’re up for a bit of a walk, you can tackle the climb through the old town. The route through the historic Barrio de Santa Cruz district, with its white houses, colourful flower pots and narrow streets, is particularly lovely.
However, for families with children or pushchairs, the castle’s famous lift is definitely the best option. It is located directly opposite Playa del Postiguet and takes visitors up through the rock to the fortress in a matter of seconds.
This ride alone is a huge hit with children – it’s almost like a secret tunnel right through the middle of the mountain.
What awaits you up there
As soon as you reach the upper levels of the castle, a panorama unfolds that leaves many visitors speechless. The view stretches across:
º the whole of Alicanteº the marina
º the long sandy beaches
º the deep blue Mediterranean Sea
º all the way to the coastline of the Costa Blanca
º On clear days, the view seems endless.
But it’s not just the view that makes the castle so special. Children can roam freely here, explore the walls and feel like little knights or princesses. Old cannons are dotted around the fortress and make for perfect photo opportunities.
Everywhere you look, there are hidden nooks, staircases and passageways that spark the imagination. Unlike in traditional museums, children can actually experience and discover things here.
The different levels of the fortress
The Castillo de Santa Bárbara consists of several levels dating from different centuries.
Upper section – The oldest fortress
This is where the oldest parts of the castle are located. Massive stone walls, towers and former guard posts give an authentic impression of life in the Middle Ages.
Middle level
This area was later expanded and used for military purposes. Small exhibitions and events are held here on a regular basis.
Lower level
The lower level has a more open layout and features cafés, seating areas and event spaces.
